Crochet

Triangle shawl
by Briana K. Designs

Surprisingly I made no progress on the shawl. I have kept a good pace for the previous colour but since the latest one has been on the hook, I've not felt drawn to it. I suspect I need a small break. I mentioned last week that the work was feeling a little like a chore at times and that is not how I want to approach a project.

So no progress on the shawl but plenty of other progress elsewhere.

Crochet pouch

I have plenty of left over yarn from the aforementioned shawl and I am not sure what to do with it. The colours of the shawl are not ones I gravitate towards for myself, and I am unsure what pattern would work for the unknown amount I have. Figuring this out feels like too much work.

Recently Hopeful Turns on YouTube shared gift ideas and in it, a pencil pouch was mentioned. I knew I had found a project.

A couple of weeks ago, I received a selection of small hooks ranging from 0.6mm to 2mm. They currently live in my usual crochet bag but I would like to protect the tips a little better. I'm sure they are sturdy enough but hey, it's as good an excuse as any to crochet more.

So I picked up the cream colour, the 2mm hook, and got to work.

A vertical colour photograph of a very small crochet work. It's so far a rectangle on a 2mm grey hook. The yarn is of a creamish colour. The ball is at the top left corner of the image. At the bottom left is a corner of a woven pouch with grey, black, and orange colours on it. A vertical colour photograph of a small crochet work on my leg. I am wearing burgundy corduroy. The crochet work is a small rectangle made with creamish yarn on a small grey hook. I am on a sofa, the edge just visible. The yarn ball rests against the armrest as well as a woven small pouch.

It was very fiddly to start with but I soon found my rhythm. It is slow work, not the quick project of the video, but I don't mind. I like slow work and I like this project. It is now easy enough that I can settle by the TV with it. It is small enough that I can carry it everywhere and add a row or two as I wait for a train. It's a fun project.

Project pouch

We have progress!

I have not touched this project for a month but yesterday I felt drawn to it.

I began with the fabric liner. I do not have many sewing skills but I have enough confidence to attempt figuring out a liner. I could follow a tutorial but I enjoy winging it and learning from my many mistakes in the process.

A horizontal colour photograph of a messy desk with fabric cut to size, scissors, crochet work, laptop, and other desk paraphernalia all over the place. The focus is the fabric work. The fabric is all blues and pinks and oranges with repeating pattern of leaves and a woman's face.

Liner cut and ready to sew, I got started with the pouch on it. This is meant to hold crochet hooks or other small accessories I use to work with my spool knitters. I used a simple back stitch because that is one thing I know from embroidery. Was that the right choice? I've no idea but for now the pouch feels sturdy enough.

A vertical colour photograph of a needle stuck at a slight angle in fabric where stitching in a blue thread is visible. The fabric has repeated motifs of flowers and is mainly in blues and pinks and oranges.

I am not used to hand sewing so the process is a bit messy and tiring. After I completed the pouch, I turned to the crochet work. Again, I needed to stitch but with a (arran size?) yarn, it was much easier than with a small needle and thread.

The pouch slouches as one corner is stitched but not the rest. A vertical colour photograph of my white hand holding up a rectangular crochet pouch in front of a white wall.

In spite of measuring multiple times and using some stitch markers to keep things in place, I ended with a very asymmetrical pouch. It is absolutely fine with me. I am very much still learning about stitching things together and I am proud to have made it this far. Now to figure out how the lining will fit. In theory just fine, but let's see how I fare with the practice...

And that is it for this week. It has been an all crochet week and it has been entirely delightful.
